CHEMICAL CUTTING FLUIDS

Chemical cutting fluids, sometimes called synthetic fluids, are the newest members of the cutting fluid family. In a few short years they have come out of the experimental and only-for-the-real-special--job category and, today, are being used in hundreds of up-to-date metalworking plants.

These fluids are blends of a number of chemical agents in water. All of these fluids are coolants; some are also lubricants. Chemical cutting fluids contain no mineral oil; they form either true solutions in water or extremely fine colloidal solutions.

Chemical agents that go into these fluids include amines and nitrites, for rust prevention; nitrates, for nitrite stabilization; phosphates and borates, for water softening; soaps and wetting agents, for lubrication and reduction of surface tension; phosphorus, chlorine, and sulfur compounds, for chemical lubrication; glycols as blending agents and humectants; and germicide, to control growth of bacteria.

True solution fluids contain mostly rust inhibitors (inorganic and organic nitrites), sequestering agents, amines, phosphates, borates, glycols or ethylene or propylene oxides condensates. These fluids are best used as grinding solutions, where they prevent rust and permit rapid heat removal.

They have a tendency, however, to leave hard or crystalline deposits when water evaporates from them, and these may interfere with the operation of chucks, turrets, slides, or other moving parts.

These agents form clear solutions in water (but often carry a dye to color the water) and are used one part in 50 to 250 parts water. These chemicals can also be added to emulsifiable oils or to other chemical coolants to enhance their rust-inhibiting properties.

Wetting-agent types contain one or more wetting agents to improve the wetting action of the water, thereby providing more uniform heat dissipation and more uniform anti-rust action. This type of chemical fluid may also contain mild lubricants (organic or inorganic), water softeners, anti-foaming agents, and humectants.

The wetting-agent type of chemical fluid is very versatile product; it has an excellent lubricating effect on moving machine parts and permits very rapid heat dissipation. Used one part in 10 to 30 parts water, it has replaced cutting oils on many operations. It can be used with high-speed-steel tools as well as carbide tools.
